In a pivotal gathering held today in Dakar, Senegal, stakeholders from diverse sectors engaged in a policy-based meeting aimed at bolstering governance and management strategies within the industrial fishing domain. The event, supported by the U.S. Department of State, congregated key voices to deliberate on enhancing economic growth opportunities within the fishing industry.
The primary objective of this meeting was to fortify local capacities and tackle the destabilizing repercussions of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing by foreign-owned industrial fishing vessels in the Gulf of Guinea and Mauritania. Discussions revolved around fostering transparency, accountability, and local empowerment to combat these challenges effectively.
The event, spearheaded by the Centre for Maritime Law and Security (CEMLAWS) Africa and the Coastal Management Center (CCM) at the University of Cape Coast, alongside FENAGIE PECHE Senegal, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts in promoting sustainable practices and safeguarding marine resources for future generations. The outcomes of this gathering are anticipated to pave the way for a more resilient and responsible fishing industry in the region.
