DWFV Project Strengthens Fisheries Enforcement Measures in Cameroon with MCS Training

On October 9, 2024, in Yaoundé, Cameroon, the government, in collaboration with the DWFV Project, conducted a training session focused on enhancing the capabilities of the Monitoring Control Surveillance (MCS) division of the fisheries ministry. The training, supported by the U.S. Department of State – Accra, aimed to equip personnel with the necessary tools to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities and related crimes at sea.

The agenda for the day included sessions on the introduction to the Fisheries Monitoring Control and Surveillance (MCS) system, the legislative and regulatory framework for fisheries management and surveillance in Cameroon, ethical considerations for the MCS system, rules of engagement at sea, and inspections of fishing vessels. The event also featured feedback sessions and simulation exercises to evaluate the effectiveness of the training.

With a focus on harmonizing and coordinating resources and procedures, the training emphasized the importance of strong enforcement measures to ensure sustainable fisheries in the region. The event concluded with closing remarks and the distribution of participation certificates, highlighting Cameroon’s commitment to improving MCS for the benefit of its marine resources.
